Shinji, Gendou's son, is the pilot of EVA-01. His father's lack of attention and his mother's death left Shinji to develop a restrained and quiet character. However he is always trying to change himself (unlike Rei who seems to like being quiet). Misato, who acts as mother/sister/friend for Shinji helps him a lot in finding the right way. Shinji feels a deep hatred for his father, who neglected him in his childhood and is using him as a tool for NERV. On the other hand he feels strangely attracted to Rei although he does not know why.

Rei Ayanami is a fourteen year old girl who is one of the Evangelion pilots. She pilots Eva unit 00, but later pilots a more advanced unit, 00 being very basic in technology. Rei is a very quiet girl who prefers to shroud herself in mystery and keep herself out of the way of others. Living alone in a single shadowed apartment, Rei has, as she believes, very little. The only thing she believes she has is the ability to help others and the world through taking on the responsibilities of piloting an Eva. This is a great responsibility for her to uphold, and Rei goes into battle with a high head, not fearing the unknown as Shinji always does in his lamenting. On the battlefield she follows Misato or Gendo's orders, keeping to their rules and yet being an agressive fighter showing her determination in suceeding.

Sohryu Asuka Langley, the exclusive pilot of Evangelion Unit-02. Also called the Second Children. Asuka has an amazing talent at piloting the Evangelion. She is also an extremely pretty and smart girl, though her attitude towards other people are quite offensive and arrogant. The young genius girl has a lot astonishing achievements, and she lookes at them with a lot of pride. As a 14 year old girl, she already graduated from a university and is piloting a super robot to protect the human race against Angels. Asuka wanted to prove to the world, to everyone that she is the best and she works really hard to maintain herself at the top position and is afraid that someone might overide her success.

Misato's role in the series is as important as anything else. She acts as the mother/friend/sister and everything else to Shinji who seems to have some problems with his emotions. She is the commander of the EVA pilots and cares for them a lot. Unlike Gendo who doesn't seem to care, Misato worries about the pilots and doesn't want to risk their lives.

Them commander and chief officer of NERV, he is the one who decides what NERV should do. He also is the father of Shinji but he doesn't show his affection to Shinji. He is cruel in a sort of way that he is willing to risk the lives of the pilots just to save what he has done. He doesn't show much emotion but he was once a very kind man until his wife, Yui died. Since then, he has changed drastically and seem to care only for Rei who is said to be the clone of his wife.
